Chemical Peels Help With Acne

Acne is a bane of adolescence and youthfulness. It spoils the face of the person, making a person self-conscious which results in lack of confidence and boldness. Many teenagers and young adults suffer from pimples. Almost eighty five percent people in the age group of eighteen to twenty four suffer from acne vulgaris. There are medicines to cure it but a chemical peel is used to treat the scars left behind by pimples.

A chemical peel acts by removing the upper skin and letting a new skin merge. This new skin may not possess and repeat all the problems of the original skin. Many types of chemicals are used in a chemical peel. It depends on the severity of the condition to be treated and the decision of both the patient and the doctor.

Alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) or beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) is used to treat the facial acne effectively. Studies have shown that mild to moderately severe can be treated with these two acid peels. Lesions cause by pimples can be effectively reduced using these two acids for the chemical peel. Some doctors prefer using beta hydroxyl acid rather than alpha hydroxyl acid as it is reported that the former has fewer side effects than the latter and the result of the former lasts linger.

Young people regard chemical peel as the best solution for pimples, the common facial acne. By using these two acids, a light skin peel is performed which also improves the fine wrinkles, fine pigmentation and lines. Uneven textured skin or discolored skin also improves with this treatment. In this type of chemical peel the upper thin layer of the skin is removed and new one grows in its place.

Both acids have proven to be very effective according to research made. These acids are organically derived. AHA contains an active ingredient, which is also found in tomato juice, sour milk and sugarcane. BHA is salicin derived which is an active ingredient found in aspirin.

The treatment takes just about an hour or two. The patient may feel a slight stinging sensation when the acid is first applied. After the treatment the patient might see redness, scaling and peeling of the skin on her face. These go away soon and the skin that emerges glows and free from zits. The doctor will cover the parts of the face that has been treated with some Vaseline based ointment and a sterile gauze. The patient may be asked to lightly wash her face with dilute vinegar or saline. She can also use ice packs if she fears that there may be swelling or burning. Within a few days the glowing skin will be worth all the trouble.
