Do Chemical Peels Work? Maybe

If you've been wondering do chemical peels work, you've probably started researching the topic to learn more about them. Basically, these facial peels work by applying chemicals to your face and "burning" the top layer of skin until it blisters and peels off. Yep, it's a harsh treatment.

As you might know, some of the most common reasons people do this is to reduce wrinkles, even out their skin tone and get rid of blemishes.

There are 3 Main Levels of Chemical Peel:

1-The lightest peel is made with Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs). You may need to do this multiple times to get the result you want.

2-The medium level is called Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). It's for surface wrinkles and blemishes. It has a longer recovery time that the AHA peel-7-10 days. And, you might have to repeat the procedure a few times to get the result you want.

3- The phenol peel is the deepest peel and therefore gives the most dramatic result. The recovery time can be 10 days or a bit more.

You Can't Have Just One

With all of these peels, you have to repeat the process periodically because your skin is alive and keeps regenerating itself.

If you know anyone who's had a chemical peel, or you've read extensively about them, the results say, "yes, they can work." If you're the right type of candidate.

Lighter skin often responds more favorably than darker skin. (That's because the peeling process can lighten skin and this can result in darker skin being blotchy.)

It can be painful and you may need pain medication afterwards. Plus, you might want to consult your schedule. You don't want your High School reunion or an important meeting to fall right in the middle of your recovery period.

It's important to have realistic expectations. A chemical peel isn't a magic wand and you should discuss your expectations with your doctor so you're fully informed and not disappointed after the process.

Effective Alternatives

Of course, there are alternatives to these expensive and time consuming procedures. If you're using certain ingredients in your skincare, you may not want to go the route of the chemical peel.

Collagen boosting ingredients like active manuka honey can increase your youthful collagen cells so your skin looks tighter and younger. Scientists at New Zealand's Waikato University found it can reduce blemishes and heal skin conditions too.

Then there's the potent Japanese sea kelp like phytessence wakame. Known as "the Fountain of Youth" in some circles, this potent seaweed will increase your levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) so your skin stays young looking.

Both of these ingredients are also moisturizers to nourish and enrich your skin.
