The Power of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can make a significant difference in the clarity of facial skin. They help minimize wrinkles, improve blotchiness, reduce acne scars, help with pigmentation problems, and can even decrease the visible damage that occurs from decades in the sun. Sound expensive? Actually, peels are an affordable option in reducing the appearance of assorted skin imperfections.

How are peels administered? Well, they're noninvasive, so there's no cutting or needles. Instead, a liquid solution is applied to the surface of the skin. The strength and type will determine the degree of downtime; milder peels may not have any, while stronger peels could take two weeks or longer. Peels are a wonderful choice for people who are not yet ready for more invasive measures. They're performed in the privacy of a doctor's office, so safety comes first.

Let's look at a few peel types.

Lighter Peels. Lighter peels, like lactic and glycolic acid, will generate a clearer, more even complexion, but the results take place over time. Little to no discomfort is experienced with this solution, and downtime, if any, is minimal; a flushed appearance or flakiness may occur. A series of light peels are generally required to obtain the desired results. This peel is especially convenient for people who do not have the ability to take time off from work and stay indoors while their skin is healing.

Medium Peels. Medium peels, like trichloroacetic acid (TCA), are used when skin damage is more significant. A stinging sensation will be felt upon application of the solution, and depending on the TCA strength, topical numbing agents may be used. Naturally, because the peel is stronger, some degree of downtime is common. The concentration of the solution usually determines healing times, but many people plan on at least seven days. More than one medium peel may be required for optimal results.

Stronger Peels. Stronger peels, like phenol acid, produce deep peeling and unearth much younger looking skin. This peel is appropriate for people who have substantial wrinkling or deep acne scars. A greater degree of discomfort accompanies phenol acid, so anesthesia may be necessary. People with fairer complexions are better suited for deeper peels; olive tones and darker shades have the potential to experience hyper or hypopigmentation. Still, for the right candidate, deep peels result in remarkable skin improvements. Only one peel is typically needed, and recovery time may take fourteen days or longer.

Chemical peels are effective at combating wrinkled skin and acne scars, but they do not address facial droopiness or sagging. Still, they can usually be combined with other procedures, so multiple concerns can be handled on the same day. Even so, it is essential to check the credentials of the facility performing the peel. Only an experienced medical office with qualified personnel should administer this treatment. In the wrongs hands, chemical peels can be dangerous.
