What Is A Chemical Peel, Anyway?

This is when chemicals are applied to the skin to create damage or a "controlled wound". This damaged skin is then peeled away to reveal newer skin underneath. The new skin usually is smoother and has less imperfections than the old skin.

There are three levels of chemical peel and different chemicals are used for each process. Liken it to salsa - mild, medium, and hot.

The mildest and gentlest of the chemical peels use alpha or beta hydroxy acids. These acids are commonly found in over the counter acne medications. Examples include, salicylic, lactic, and glycolic acids. The medium version uses a stronger chemical call tricholoracetic acid. And the "hot" version or deep peel is also referred to as a phenol peel.

What conditions does a chemical peel treat?

Usually this procedure is performed on the face, sometimes on the hands and neck. If you have minor signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, or minor sun damage, this could be right for you. Other skin imperfections are also treated like acne scars, age spots, and freckles.

What is involved?

If you opt for either the light or medium peels, the procedure can be performed in the practitioner's office. No anesthesia is required and you may or may not be prescribed some pain medication for discomfort or burning feeling. Both procedures will eventually require retreatment to achieve or maintain the results. The medium peel may take a few days to heal.

The deep peel - phenol peel, does require anesthesia as it is very painful. The recovery time is longer, possibly up to one month. Also, the risks are greater as are the benefits. The look achieved through a phenol peel have been known to last up to 20 years - although this may not be typical.

As with any medical procedure, finding the right doctor and evaluating your medical history are essential. Cosmetic surgery procedures like juvederm, are comparable alternatives and should be considered as well.
