Skin Whitening and Chemical Peels

Chemical skin peels such as AHA peels have mild skin whitening effect and can be used for skin lightening. AHA peels are the solutions which contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (for example Lactic acid, Glycolic acid, Malic acid, Tartaric acid etc.). Lactic acid and Glycolic acid are the most well known and common used AHAs.

The action of AHA products is based on the ability of these acids to remove dead skin cells layer from the skin surface and to reveal the new, smooth and healthy skin. Chemical peels also stimulate collagen production, speed up cell renewal, help to moisturize the skin and diminish different kinds of skin imperfections including pigmental spots, freckles, birthmarks and other areas of uneven pigmentation.

Chemical peels are quite appropriate for all skin types, but some side effects are possible: redness, peeling, itchiness or swelling which may last up to 5 days depending on acid concentration. Chemical peels have different level of penetration into the skin depending of the concentration of the acid. AHAs are used in low concentrations (5-10%) - the most safe solutions but the less effective, 10-50% concentrations - more effective solutions, but there are some restrictions and contraindications of using them, 50-70% - the highest concentrations which are applied only under medical control and are the most effective against melasma, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.

AHAs skin whitening action is based on their ability to remove the upper skin layers which consist of dead and damages skin cells and to reveal new, fair, healthy and young skin as well as the ability to inhibit the melanin production. Melanin is the dark pigment produced by the cells called melanocytes, melanin production is regulated by enzyme called tyrosinase. AHAs in high concentrations can inhibit the action of tyrosinase and decrease melanin production in the skin.

Thereby, chemical peels can lighten the skin due to their ability to to exfoliate the skin and to decrease melanin production. There is a variety of chemical peels can be used for skin lightening, but it is necessary to choose the peel and its concentration which gives the best result with the least risks and side effects. When solutions with high acid concentrations are applied to achieve the best results it is highly recommended to apply them under medical control.
