Chemical Peels At Home - What To Know

If you're someone who had skin with fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, sun damage, acne scarring or post acne hyperpigmentation, you may be interested in having a chemical peel done to remove those unsightly imperfections. A chemical peel can virtually eliminate skin imperfection by penetrating the skins surface to get rid of the damaged and discolored skin cells.

The chemical peel will basically allow for new skin cell generation by inducing peeling sloughing off the damaged cells revealing the healthy unblemished skin underneath. Chemical peels can diminish wrinkles, lighten up skin discolorations, improve acne scars and even remove pre-cancerous lesions. Unfortunately chemical peels can be expensive when preformed at your dermatologist office and even more expensive when done at a skin care spa by a licensed skin care specialist. But there is a choice for those who cannot afford the professional peel. You can do it yourself! Most chemical peels are easy to do as long as you follow the directions, and the actual chemical peel kits are relatively inexpensive. In this article we will go over the basics on what you should know about chemical peels at home.

Know your skin type.

You should know by now what kind of skin you have. Whether or not you have dry or dehydrated skin, or oily and acne prone skin there are certain peels hat address different skin imperfections. The Jessners peel for one works well on acne prone skin because it contains salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol. All three of these components work well to combat ace and acne scarring. If you have dry skin with fine lines and wrinkles, you may opt for a mild Glycolic peel which will stimulate collagen production to smooth and tighten your skin.

Do your research.

Most at home peel kits can be found on the Internet and will have information on how to use them and what to use them for. Target your specific skin condition and research it. For example a person who has a large birthmark or port wine stain on their face may need to use a deeper peel in order to get really good results. TCA peels contain trichloroacetic acid which can penetrate the skin well to help improve these conditions. If you do your research on your specific skin condition, you will know what type of chemical peel to buy for optimal results.

Follow the directions.

Once you buy your chemical peel kit there will be a direction pamphlet in the box. Make sure you read through it thoroughly and follow the directions carefully. The directions will give you and outline of how to perform the peel step by step and what precautions and safety measures to take. It may suggest doing a patch test on a small section of skin to see how your skin reacts to the peel. This is important and you should not skip this step. You never know if you are allergic to something until you try it so instead of applying the peel to you whole face and having an adverse effect do the patch test. After you do your peel wait at least a week or two before doing another one. You need to have sufficient down time between peel in order to insure proper recovery of the skin.

Your skin will be sensitive after the peel, make sure you use sunscreen every day to prevent sun damage.

Don't be too ambitious.

You're not a dermatologist, don't go and buy the deepest strongest peel available. Start off slowly with a as gentle a peel as you can find. The Lactic peel is a good peel for first time peelers because it is the most gentle and requires little or no recovery time. As you start to do peel more often your skin will become thicker, and will build up a tolerance to the chemical peels. For the second peel you may way to try a Glycolic peel or a Salicylic acid peel. Both are gentle but will induce more peeling of the epidermal layer of skin increasing the peeling effect. Wait one to two weeks between each peel. As you become more experienced you will know exactly what you're doing and how your skins reaction will be. Take your time and be patient.Optimal results of any chemical peel are best after you've done it a few times.
