Do Chemical Peels Work? Risks, Dangers, Complications of Chemical Peel

Rejuvenation is done in various ways and one of them is by using a chemical peel. In this procedure chemicals are used to remove the wrinkles, scars, lines, small warts, acne marks, discoloration and other skin problems for the face, neck, hands and legs.

Chemical peels are non invasive, there is no surgery and one does not go under the scalpel to beautify oneself. By merely using chemicals the skin becomes good and attractive. There are some creams in the market which have mild chemicals added into them. When a person uses this cream once or twice a day, significant and remarkable changes can be seen. But an experienced person should do a chemical peel treatment.

Some states allow people without a medical degree to perform this procedure but he should be someone with very good experience. There are several types of chemical peels, which work in different manner and produce different types of results. All the chemicals work in similar manner but it is their degree of concentration, the method of application and the type of skin it is applied on, that makes the difference. The basic principle is to remove the affected and damaged skin surface and make way for a fresher and newer skin, which does not have the problems of the earlier skin.

The main side effects, risks and dangers are that any chemical peel produces a sudden sting when applied. This is of a short duration and does not need an anesthesia in the treatment though a deep chemical peel or the phenol peel may need mild sedation. After the treatment, the skin may hurt, or swell, or become red. The blistering of the skin may produce an oozing effect where liquids ooze out of the skin. The treated skin has to be kept moist and lubricated so that the crusting is easy. The new skin may be bright red or pink. In the case of blue skin peel, the skin may have a bluish tinge and later a pearly abnormal color. While healing, the skin should not be exposed to sunlight and other elements.

In some cases, the swelling of the face is so much that the eyes may remain sunk and closed till normalcy returns. Though generally one treatment is sufficient to last for at least three to four years, some people may need more treatments at suitable interval for a perfect finish. Once the treatment is done, the person will look fresh and rejuvenated.
